Former Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez’ time at the Spanish club already looked doomed when he claimed that it was difficult to say that Cristiano Ronaldo was the undisputed best player in the world.

Benitez made those comments in the club’s pre-season tour and he never recovered in a political sense. He was sacked from the role after just six months with many blaming Ronaldo for the rather poor performances throughout the first half of the campaign. After averaging more than a goal per game in the last five years, Ronaldo took a long time to get into double figures.

His goal scoring touch appears to have returned with Ronaldo contributing immensely to Madrid staying in touch with leaders Barcelona. There is a new face in the dugout, as Zinedine Zidane has been appointed as the replacement. The Frenchman has immediately taken time to get Ronaldo on his side. He says that Ronaldo is the best player bar none. When asked about the rivalry with Lionel Messi, Zidane claimed that rivalry is always a good thing in football since it helps an individual to improve. Under the Frenchman, Madrid have dropped only two points in the last five games but this has not been sufficient to close the gap on Barcelona.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is the best. People can say what they like about Cristiano Ronaldo, but in his heart he’s a good person. Messi is the rival and that rivalry is great for the footballing spectacle, it’s what the fans want to see,” said Zidane in contrast to Benitez’ approach. “To say that he is one of the best in the world I believe is sufficient. It is like asking my daughter if she prefers my wife or me. The father or the mother. It’s not easy,” said Benitez during the pre-season.
